"Lt. Colonel Victor Fehrenbach has served honorably for 18 years in the Air Force as an F-15E Aviator. He was hand-picked to protect the Washington, D.C. airspace after 9/11. He flew combat missions in Iraq and Afghanistan, targeting the Taliban and Al Qaeda. Lt. Col. Fehrenbach has only been an asset to the United States Air Force, not a detriment to unit cohesion, morale, or good order."and from the Air Force News:
To read more about him, and sign a petition, go here."Born into an Air Force family — his father was a navigator and retired as a lieutenant colonel and his mother worked as a nurse — Fehrenbach maintains he has been discreet about his sexual orientation; his parents didn’t know was gay until mid-May, just before he went public in hopes of spurring a change to the “don’t ask, don’t tell” law.
A year ago, though, his career came to a standstill when officials notified him that a civilian acquaintance had identified him as gay.
Fehrenbach’s experience as an instructor-level weapons systems officer included time in both the F-15E Strike Eagle and the EF-111 Raven. Missions took him over Baghdad during the 2003 invasion, above Afghanistan in 2002 and into the Balkans for Operation Allied Force in 1999. He has 2,180 flying hours, nine Air Medals — one for heroism — and five Air Force Commendation Medals."
From Fine Politics, Noalzumi writes:
"Lt. Col. Fehrenbach is a very rare individual, an F-15E weapons systems officer (WSO, or “back-seater”). The F-15E is one of the most capable fighter-bombers in the world today, and is one of the reasons American forces were so successful over Iraq, Kosovo, Afghanistan, and Iraq again (at least at first). It’s also very sophisticated, and the tactics the pilots have to learn and the training they have to undergo are equally so. When it’s claimed that the Air Force has invested $25 million in this man, that’s totally believable. Those guys train virtually all the time. And the fact is, not everybody can do that job. A good WSO needs tech-savvy, good reflexes, situational awareness, etc. Not to mention the gobs of combat experience the man has by now, that he was passing into others, knowledge that could very well save his student’s lives one day.Though I'm not a watcher of Maddow, she did interview the colonel.
This is the cost of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. Lt. Col. Fehrenbach has incalculable value to this country, is almost literally irreplaceable, and the rules say, “Get rid of him.”

This sort of thing makes me crazy. It boggles the mind that DADT isn't even close to being repealed. Joseph McCarthy would be proud.
Thanks for the link to the petition; although I wonder how much use it will be in moving the obstinate, it did make me feel a little better to sign it.
It stinks. I have to say that Obama's promise to rescind this law, and Gates's claim "we've got our plates full right now," is weak. The colonel isn't the only gay soldier, and frankly, the lives of our spouses DEPEND on fighters like him.
I just wish all the wives would get in there and raise a ruckus. Really, how stupid to have this fighter left out of what is a real and very dangerous war that is just heating up.
Just wanted to let you know I linked this post.
Thank you for posting it.
Thanks, Sis. I really appreciate you linking to me. I'll stick your blog over on my sidebar.
LTC Fehrenbach isn't the only one to get this axe. Go through the Service Members Legal Defense Network and you'll see scores of stories of soldiers with highly needed skills who were cut. They include an Arabic translator --holy cow! Don't we NEED these guys, a woman who had 28 years in the Navy --also, highly qualified, impeccable record.
And we're getting rid of these well trained and educated people because of ...what? Homophobia? You mean our political system is more AFRAID of homosexuality than we are of the Taliban, and radical insurgents?
Oh gimme a break!
I just watched the video and want to say it is very likely that his weapons on target wiped out the enemy who shot an RPG into a vehicle just ahead of my husband's when 3ID was on its way to Baghdad. As soon as the vehicle was hit airstrikes were ordered on that position and in came the fighter jets. I could care less about the sexual orientation of the guy dropping those bombs.
I jsut found this blog via SisB and I can't seem to stop until I read every one of your psots.
Have fun in Savannah, Kanani. We lived there for 2 years and I have many fond memories of the City, Tybee Island, Hilton Head... living on base was a treat during the deployment because the children and spouses bonded - but living in Savannah would also be dreamy. Good luck with the move - and with your teens. My best to your husband on his new life journey!
I don't want to be anonymous, but I don't have a blog... yet.
this may be showing up as my son's google account - I need to get one of those!

Well, it looks like I am no longer an anonymous blog commenter! Cool. And I apologize for my dyslexic typing above.
Hey Awiv!
Yes, I had to put the anonymous comment marker up because of crackpots. If they're okay, I let them stay.
Yes, I don't give a hoot about the sexual orientation of the guy dropping bombs or the translator making it easier for our troops to understand what is being said in Arabic.
And I think those who raise all sorts of objections to gays in the military only see them in a completely sexualized way. What they don't see is the humanity, capability, and commitment of these human beings.
I am looking forward to Savannah. Hubs is already there. We'll sell this house and then we have to put it into another. Hopefully I can find work in Savannah. I'll just have to trek over to the base a lot to meet the other families.
You don't have to set up a blog, but yeah! Get a Gmail account! It's GREAT.
OK, found this post, but still no information on what happened to the LTC, how was his sexual orientation discovered?
Apparently he was outed by a civilian.
Also go through what SisB has to say. Just scroll up and click on her name.
